Social Navigators Weekly Resources

Weekly Home Practice

The Importance of Practice

Practicing social skills at home is a key part of helping children truly learn and use what they’re being taught in group sessions. While children may demonstrate skills during structured social groups, those skills become meaningful when they can use them across different environments, people, and situations—this is called generalization. By continuing to practice at home, children have more opportunities to build confidence, strengthen their understanding, and apply skills in real-life moments.

Home practice also increases engagement and repetition, which are essential for learning. Simple, everyday interactions—like playing a game, greeting a family member, or taking turns—create natural opportunities to reinforce skills like communication, flexibility, and emotional regulation. Additionally, practicing with family members and peers helps children feel more comfortable and successful in social situations, making it easier for them to connect with others outside of structured settings.

Consistent practice across settings helps turn new skills into lasting habits, setting the foundation for stronger relationships and greater independence over time.
